Medini (Sanskrit) [from vedas fat, marrow] The earth; so called from its legendary creation from the marrow and fat of two demons who sprang from the ear of the sleeping Vishnu. Before they could kill Brahma, Vishnu awoke and killed them. Their bodies, thrown into the sea, produced so much fat and marrow that Narayana used it to form the earth. Here medas, while meaning fat or marrow, also signifies the stored-up richness of life or vitality, a treasury or fountain of vital power.

  1. Swamin,

I feel the story of Brahma and Madhu-Kaitabha has spiritual significance as well - Madhu & Kaitabha representing Tamo-Rajo guna which over come Sudda Sattava knowledge represented by Brahma; Ego, Vishnu Maya causes such Suddha Sattava knowledge to be forgotton and gets us entangled in samsara.

There is a story about a shishya who had been purified by 12 years of brahcharya & hatha yoga. The Guru awakened his soul only by chanting Om once. Likewise, our Lord awakens jada atma by Omkara (Om kara itself represents vedas); Tamo-Rajo guna (Madhu-Kaitabha) runs away by mere Omkara chanted by our Lord.
